Maternity Pay When You Work for Yourself

A free, simple guide to what and how you can claim when there's no employer to sort it out for you.

Does this sound like you?

If you're expecting a baby and you run your own business, you might be wondering how maternity pay works when you haven't got an employer paying you.

It's one of those things that feels confusing when you've already got more than enough on your plate.
So let's take the fear out of it and keep it simple.

Here's the reassuring bit

As a sole trader, you can't get Statutory Maternity Pay, that comes from an employer. But there's a payment just for people like you, called Maternity Allowance and it comes straight from the government instead.

If you qualify for the full rate, it's currently £194.32 a week for up to 39 weeks. That's the same headline figure an employed mum would get.

What's inside the guide

- How Maternity Allowance works and what you could be entitled to.

- How your National Insurance affects your rate and the one small move that can protect your full entitlement.

- Exactly what you need and how to claim, step by step.

- A quick checklist to work through at your own pace, so nothing gets missed.

- Answers to the questions I get asked most, from whether it's taxed to what happens if you're late claiming.

Who is this guide for?

You're self-employed, you're expecting a baby and you'd rather have this explained simply once than go down a rabbit hole on Google at 11pm. This is for you.
